After months of sitting inside a
classroom, many children welcome the idea of exploring the outdoors
alongside new friends in adventurous ways they’ve never tried before.
Summer adventure camps offer activities such as rafting, hiking,
horseback riding, ropes courses, and more. Children are put in
extraordinary circumstances and learn alternative ways of responding to
the unexpected. They are challenged to see things from new and different
perspectives and gain hands-on experience. They learn communication and
conflict resolution skills with the help of trained counselors.
When a group of children or young people are put together in an
unfamiliar situation and environment, there are bound to be problems.
Skilled counselors are on hand at all times at a good adventure camp to
spot problems as soon as they arise. The counselors teach the campers
how to work through the problems in positive ways. When children come
home from adventure camp, they are more likely to use negotiation and
compromise to resolve conflict, rather than anger or withdrawal. They
are also likely to be more self-confident and independent.
After months of sitting inside a classroom, many children welcome the
idea of exploring the outdoors alongside new friends in adventurous ways
they’ve never tried before. There are dozens of adventure camps across
the country to choose from. The choice should be based on the child’s
preference, with the parents’ guidance and support. Nearly all good
adventure camps are residential programs in which children spend at
least a few weeks away from home. Children should be prepared for living
away from home and understand the responsibilities involved before
setting off on this adventure.
