When selecting a boarding school for
your child you should make sure that the school follows the guidelines
and regulations issued by the Department for Education and Skills.
The Department for Education and Skills of the United Kingdom is the
entity that prescribes guidelines and sets regulations for boarding
schools. The regulations include the minimum perimeter, or living space,
to be allotted each student and the requirements for the provision of
basic necessities.
The minimum floor area for each student with regard to dormitory,
cubicle, and bedroom space is attained by multiplying the number of
students sleeping in the dormitory by 4.2mē and then adding 1.6mē. A
minimum distance of 0.9m is to be maintained between any two beds in a
dormitory, bedroom, or cubicle.
When students are provided with a cubicle, each student must have a
window and a floor area of at least 5.0mē. A bedroom for a single
student must have a floor area of at least 6.0mē. A boarding school must
provide a total floor area of at least 2.3mē living space for each
student. A minimum of one bathtub or shower must be available for every
ten students.
The above are a few of the guidelines and regulations prescribed for
boarding schools. These are many others. It is apparent that, despite
their appeal, not all boarding schools around the world meet these
minimum standards.
