While modern ideas of education and
child development conflict with the traditional boarding school model as
advantageous, not all the data are in yet.
The latest philosophies of child development and education, such as
constructivism, and new methods of teaching music to children, including
the Orff Schulwerk and Suzuki methods, require daily social interaction
between children and their parents. A cooperative international project
by European Union-Canada called “Child Welfare Across Borders” considers
boarding schools as a form of displacement of the child with permanent
effects. Current scientific understanding of the human brain and child
development reinforces this view toward child growth and education.
While modern ideas of education and child development conflict with the
traditional boarding school model as advantageous, not all the data are
in yet. Concrete numbers have not been yet been calculated from the
available statistics on the ratio of boys to girls sent to boarding
schools, the total number of children in a given population by country
in boarding schools, the average age of admission to a boarding school
across populations, and the average number of years of education
received by boarding school students.
